SpamHaus, the international organization that strives to rid the web of spam, blocks more than 80 billion spam per day. On their site, they proclaim:
“The Spamhaus Project is an international nonprofit organization whose mission is to track the Internet's spam operations and sources, to provide dependable realtime anti-spam protection for Internet networks, to work with Law Enforcement Agencies to identify and pursue spam gangs worldwide, and to lobby governments for effective anti-spam legislation.”

Recently, Spamhaus was the target of a layered DoS (Denial-of-service) attack, referred to as a DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-service) attack. This was no ordinary DDos attack, already being referred to as one of the largest cyber attacks in the history of the Internet. Other reports actually refer to the attack as being the largest DDos attack in online history. The severe attack knocked the Spamhaus site offline temporarily, forcing them to call on CloudFlare. (CloudFlare acts as a safety filter for websites, routing the good visitors to their destination and preventing the bad from ever threatening your site).

Just one month later, authorities have announced an arrest in the investigation of who was behind the massive attack.

Sven Olaf Kamphuis was traveling in Barcelona, Spain when he was detained for questioning. (Although police are not confirming his name, they do acknowledge that the man they have arrested is Dutch and has been a suspect of other web attacks in the past). Kamphuis is the mind behind CyberBunker – an organization that is on the other end of the Internet spectrum from SpamHaus.

Boldly proclaiming "Freedom of speech is in the eye of the beholder" over a large photo of Julian Assange, CyberBunker describes itself succinctly on its About page:
“CyberBunker was founded in 1998 and is one of the few independent Internet providers in the world. We started as pioneers in the hosting industry and will continue with our unique hardened facilities to protect your servers from intruders and attackers. CyberBunker is an entrepreneurial firm that provides IP-based communication and entertainment services to consumers and companies around the globe. We combine personalized service and a unique privacy policy with a solid technical foundation.”

Although CyberBunker is a self-proclaimed enemy of SpamHaus, so far they are mum on any involvement in the attack on SpamHaus. If Kamphuis is as "secure, reliable” and “untouchable" as he proclaims to be on his website, then surely he has no reason to be concerned about the accusations against him... right?
